The tragedy we pet owners all sign onto.

Our beloved Robert - known to readers of "Cleaving" and the Epilogue of "J&J" - died on Sunday. He was 11 or 12 years old, a dear, dear animal that we were lucky enough to share our lives with for 6 years. The very best dog that ever there was. Eric and I are destroyed, of course, and I've only now felt up to posting this.

Of course, losing an animal doesn't rank up there with King Lear on the tragedy scale, empirically speaking, but those of you out there who have gone through this know how excruciating it is. It's what we sign up for, though. He was our heart - and though we know we gave him a good life, and have no regrets on that score - the blank spot he's left is cold and immense.

All love, my big bear.

PS I ask out of respect to his sweetness that people maybe refrain from violent, nasty comments. I'll post again soon and those of you who get off on meanness and name calling can resume your activities. From this post, I will be removing them.

I am so very sorry for the loss of your beloved pet, Robert.

I have Buddy, my 14 year old toy poodle that I almost lost in December...and my world came crashing down...we are taking it one day at a time....

I have lost others as well....but I believe they will always be with you in some way...

There is no other love like the love of a pet.

You are in my thoughts....

I have always had animals in my life and it is heartbreaking when they have to go. I can't understand the sort of person who would be mean or cruel about a pet or the real grief experienced at the loss of one. I believe that a soul is the essence of love and as animals love more thoroughly than we do, I believe they go to heaven. Sorry if that's a bit weird or soppy.

Julie,
I have lost a pet dog who was like my child so I truly understand the terrible sense of loss and lonliness that you feel. Someone sent this poem to me those many years ago and I truly believe it gave me comfort. I hope it will for you too.

The Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Julie,
my name is Marcela Ferrinha (diretodacozinha@ymail.com) and just like you I live to cook and follow recipes and cookbooks. Just watched your movie and I love it! Inspired me a lot. I'm pretty much like you because I always cook for my husband and he's my best crowd.
I also have a blog and I write for a newspaper in Brazil where I'm from ( if you would like to take a look would be a pleasure www.marceladiretodacozinha.blogspot.com and www.oestadorj.com.br) both are in portuguese and I'm trying to translate , but just like you , I have a full job and sometimes I really don't have enough time to do so. I wish my days had 100 hours , lol. I live here in USA, Park City , Utah.
I have one question: why Julia Child didn't like your blog? I really didn't understand that in the movie.
Anyway, I would love to hear from you if possible, please! And to keep talking with you sometimes, changing recipes, I don't know Brazilian recipes.
thank you and talk you soon.
And sorry for you loss... I lost my dog last year I was devasteded...

I hope that you can find something that makes you feel closer to Robert too. Hang in there....it does get better.

A pet is a family member. Loosing one is a loss that is so hard. You feel cheated because even a healthy life span is too short. I have 4 pomeranians, 2 are suffering from health issues. I actually saw this, while at the Vet today. If in your sadness someone does not understand, then they are not a pet owner. When you are ready, there will be another little soul waiting for you to care for him or her.

I have lost my dog too and my wife too, we have even blogged about it. (link to blog if you want you can click on it and you can check our dog. You will not believe, I was digging up a hole in the ground to buried and he still had his eyes open, I was thinking how I will close his eyes and suddenly his eyes closed and I saw him on the clouds and I even photographed it, so life is just sometimes sad, but life is sometimes cheerful.

I can send you my spiritual poems if you want, however i am not a poet. :-) Thanks for your inspiration.

I am so sorry for the loss of your family member. I don't call my dogs "dogs" but rather my children. They love you and always want to give you "puppy kisses" and they don't talk back. There will be a hole in your household and in your life for a while, and for the first part of that "while" the hole may seem huge.

Sending you a big hug to comfort you.

BTW, your movie has inspired my daughter, who does not know the first thing about cooking, to take a cooking class. Yeah. I was going to sign up for a culinary degree at the local college but the professor talked me out of it, said I was too old. I had just turned 50. So instead, I just cook for all my family members who ask me to make them things. I believe I will have to purchase the book Mastering the Arts of French Cooking and cook a few of the receipes.

Best of luck in the coming days. Take it one day at a time.

I lost my chow/sharpei named CHORIZO on October 14, 2007 and I miss her still so much every day. In fact this morning on my way to exercise, I drove down the street that last we took her to the vet for cremation.Tears always fall from my eyes when I think of her and the love she gave us. Her ashes are with us, so she will be with us always. I send your healing prayers Julie and hope that you find some comfort in remembering the good times with your family pet member.

My two cats, aged 15 and 16 passed away within a month of each other last year. They were my family and I completely understand both how heartbroken you must be and how silly it feels to admit it. I can't believe that you'd have to create a no-mean-remarks clause on your post!

I lasted about 3 days after last cat passed away before I went and picked up two kittens from the SPCA. It was awful to come home to an empty house, and even worse to grate cheese and not have someone begging at my feet!

At only 2 weeks old these kittens were thrown into a garbage bin and abandoned. They were found dehydrated and with broken bones - they needed love as much as I needed to love them.

The kittens will never replace my first two cats, but their tumbling antics always bring new and different smiles to my face.

All my sympathies.

So sorry to hear of your loss. Pets bring such joy to our lives. They fill spaces that humans cannot touch. I feel they were created to fill those spaces. Each and every pet who share our lives brings it's special personality and love. I read once that the reason pets live such short lives is that it gives us humans the chance to love many in our lifetime. I don't pretend to understand why they can't be with us longer but each and every pet I have owned has brought me an new understanding of love, loyalty and above all, to enjoy the little things in life. There is nothing better than a full bowl of kibble, a worn tennis ball and a loving lap to rest on. What more could we want out of life?

RIP Robert-you were loved beyond belief and you knew it.

We all need to feel we are doing "something", right? I was excited to find your blog, but after reading parts of it, I questioned whether I had found the right blog. To be honest, the language you use really disappointed me. I know, I know. You are thinking "who does this chick think she is", "don't read it then", "how judgmental". But honestly, would your story or blog be any less interesting without using Christ's name in that manner? Just felt the need to ask. Oh...I am very sorry about your dog. I love my dogs too.

Julie, over the years I've had several pets and seen them go from bouncing little furballs to old age and float away into their resting place. It's hard... because you think they'll be around forever. We have an akita, a gorgeous mass of black and white and playfulness, and we're not bracing for the worst since he's aging badly, mainly because he's such a bundle of love.

It's always best to remember the best our pets give us, which is laughter, love, and our own humanity.

He was family. I am sorry for your loss.

My brother and sister-in-law have two young kids. They used to have a pet rabbit. It died. Death is confusing for kids because they live their lives in the present; they can at once know the rabbit died and still believe it will be around tomorrow.

My brother decided to use the moment to teach them about death by giving the rabbit a burial. He took his children, the rabbit in a shoe box, and a shovel to the back of the yard and dug a hole. Then he gave the kids a chance to say goodbye, which was right about the time his daughter grew impatient with the whole affair. She said with a sense of urgency "Do it, do it, just hurry up and bury it."

Those kids have had to cope with the death of their rabbit, their aunt and their grandfather. They're pretty resilient.

I hope the immense pain of the blank spot Robert left subsides and your and Eric's hearts are filled again with what can happen.

Hi Julie. I've started reading your blog (The Julie/Julia project) from the very beginning after I recently saw the movie. I was so inspired, I tried making coq au vin last night after getting off work. You think I would have listened to your blogs and realized that French food takes a hell of a long time. As I was staring at my liquid trying to boil down and drinking the rest of the wine that wasn't used in the chicken AND reeling from absolute famine... I thought, "I cannot believe she did this almost every day for a year." I gained a huge amount of respect for you last night... just thought I'd share this with you and perhaps knowing you're still inspiring more servantless cooks in America will help you smile, even just for a moment, through your difficult time right now =)

So sad to hear about your dog. It's never easy. My childhood dog died at age 15 when I was eighteen and I was heartbroken. Even more sad that you're having to deal with mean commenters. Ugh internet trolls have to ruin everything. Hope it doesn't get you down too much; you've accomplished quite a lot.

I never knew what it felt like when lossing a pet. We had a pet parrot named "Pancho". It really was my mom's pet but I ended up loving him/her also. We never had a dna done to know it's gender. Pancho was a funny little parrot. He would argue with me when I would reprimand him or mimic my laugh when I would laugh. What happen was one day a labor guy came to finish my mother's kitchen sink and since Pancho was not into knowing him he flew away. We would let Pancho lose in the house. He was well behave in top of his cage the only time he would fly around the house was when people that he didn't know would come in. But it was very very sad when he flew away. My parents and I would walk around the block screaming his name out to see if he would come back which he never did. Took me more than a month not to be sad anymore. But their are times that I think of him.

Julie, I know how it feels when your dog means so much to you. Tommy was a 100-lb, 14 year-old, love-of-my-life when my husband and I lost him to sudden illness exactly 2 years ago. I've experienced a lot of death, really, but his was different. He was in my heart in a unique way. He was just so good and so true.
So, I send my heartfelt condolences to you and your husband. I hope every memory makes you smile...and remember that Robert was given just a few years to spend on this earth; who better to have cared for him than you?

I am new to your site. I just finished J&J (it was the first book I downloaded to my new barnes&noble nook - love it) and had also just read Julia's "My Life in France." I enjoyed your writing and your story so much - thanks! I have been cooking for forty of my 50 years and had gone through just about every phase possible - or so I thought...now I will embark on a new one with you and Julia to guide me.

My dog is my baby. We lost one of our dogs a few months ago, too. I can't remember any time in my life I cried as hard as the day I realized she wouldn't make it. (Veterinarian oversight in an injection he gave her caused her to die pretty suddenly).

We still have Dax. If not for my husband, he'd be the love of my life. :-) I try not to pretend that he'll live forever...it's hard to even think about his day.

I heard a story once about a vet who put down a family's dog. They were all pondering afterwards why it is that dogs have to die so much sooner than humans. The little boy of the family spoke up and said that he always thought that we were put on this earth to love each other and to be kind to everyone; and since dogs learn how to do that so quickly, they don't have to stay as long.

Anyway, remember him well. There are few things in life as enriching to our souls as a faithful dog.

I recently have lost two family members this past week, and all those deaths in Haiti, seems this year has decided to give us a jolt or a kick in our ass as one would say.

I hope this brings you some comfort! I'm sorry for your lost. I do not look forward to that day when the time comes for our puppy.

A Dog's Purpose, (from a 6-year-old)

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a
ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners,
Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very
attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the
family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to
perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it
would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure.
They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's
family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog
for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was
going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any
difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after
Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal
lives are shorter than human lives.

Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why."
Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next
stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, "People are born so that they can learn how to live a
good life — like loving everybody all the time and being nice,
right?" The six-year-old continued, "Well, dogs already know how
to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

Live simply.
Love generously.
Care deeply.
Speak kindly.

I just watched Julie & Julia for the first time tonight. Inspired by Meryl Streep's speech at the Golden Globes, my husband ventured out into the Southern California rains and rented the film. If Julia was your inspiration, you are now mine.

I searched for your blog and found what might have been the last 4 posts of the Julie / Julia Project. One of them was the day you announced Robert's arrival. As a dog mom of four, I was so happy to see you had adopted this big, giant boy. I then searched further to see if I could read more about your life since the project ended, and ran across this page.

I'm so, so sorry for your loss. In the past few years we've lost two cats and two dogs. It's never easy and - I swear - nothing is more painful. Just know that you gave Robert a GREAT life and he, in return, blessed your lives with his love. Animals are angels here on Earth. I truly believe that. All good. No bad. Just love and trust and all of those things we humans strive to be and uphold.

Thank you, again, for your inspiring story. You have sparked my torch and I plan on running with it. Where? Not sure yet. But I refuse to leave this Earth without discovering a little greatness of my own.

All the best to you. And, once again, sorry for your loss.

I just finished reading both your books in the past ten days and I loved when you talked about Robert. I lost my beloved Sandie five years ago and I was broken hearted. Shortly after I could not stand the emptiness and I got another dog. While he is not she, like individuals, they are all their own people. I am just so sorry for your loss.

I am so VERY sorry, Julie. He was obviously a wonderful dog and clearly well loved. You're right: that's a part of the deal you strike when you bring a furry family member into your life, but knowing that doesn't make it one damn bit easier. My most sincere condolences to you and Eric.

My heart goes out to you & your husband !!..It hurts the most, when you step over them a week later..and they are not there :*(... (My son and I made the decision to have our beloved "tank" cremated. At the age of 17 and tattoos being the *thing* on his planet, He asked me if he could have a tattoo of Tanks paw print,on his chest. with the cremation ashes mixed in with the ink.. p.s.- unbelievable Total closure for the 17 year old after this experience!)

Hi there, so sorry for your loss. I had to have my golden retriever put down two years ago, one of the hardest things I've ever done. She was eleven.
I just stumbled upon this on the internet after seeing the movie a few weeks ago. I'm Tina, 31, (North Dakota) and just learning how to cook. I've started a fire with macaroni and cheese and accidentally deep fried a grilled cheese sandwich, screwing up has been memorable. But I managed Thanksgiving dinner and last week I made my first banana bread, which everyone loved!
Congratulations on the book, the movie, and the cooking...again very sorry about your dog, I hated my life without a dog and brought Finder home from the humane society a month after I lost my sweet Crimson. I still think of her often.

I'm am so sorry for your loss.

Right before Christmas, we had to put our beloved dog Sally to sleep.
I'm 16 and my parents got her for me when I was five. So it was incredibly difficult to even imagine life without her.

However, as silly as it may sound to some, I believe she is up in heaven probably playing fetch with Moses right now. And how can that not place a smile on your face.

Love and Happiness,
Kristen

Makes me miss my Marcus all over again. I know they are suppose to go before us, that is, after all, the natural order of things, but those eyes of unconditional love... we have so much to learn from our beloved pets.

We recently put down our dog of 11 (give or take) years...on Christmas Eve to be exact. It's sad to hear that you too are now going through the quiet that ensues a dear friend leaving forever. I'm sure he had a lovely life.

You made a positive and loving influence in you dogs (pets) life. Everyday will get easier to deal with. Our pets are part of the family and when we lose one of them it's like losing family. My heart goes out to you.

I just watched your movie and really enjoyed it.
Is your original blog, that the movie was based on, still online? If so, how can I access it?

Thanks,

Julie,

I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my miniature dachshund, Tootsie several months ago and I still miss her every day. I never knew that such a little dog could leave such a big space she would leave in my heart. I pray your hearts heal and you can remember only the smiles.

Julie,

As I sit in bed tonight listening to my husband snore and reading your blogs; I think of the animals that have touched my families lives through out the years. I have had several dogs and cats that have either passed because of age or I have had to find other homes for because of moves or I wasn't able to care for their needs. It never does get any easier on the time you experience what pet lovers go through when they are no longer there. The hurt will dule but you will always have the good times in your mind. You'll see a furry face or two over the years that will remind you of them and you will step back and think god I miss him. For that and your's and your huband's loss I am truly from the bottom of my heart sorry.

I also just finished watching your movie. I hated having to pause it to go to an appointment. As soon as I helped my son finish his homework and put him to bed I was able to finish it. Julie I want to thank you. This movie means so much to me. It has given me so many things to think about. I was excepted to Le Cordon Bleu in Pittsburg upon graduating High School. I had everything in place to go until I found out that I was expecting. My son was due in the middle of mid-terms. So I did the last thing I ever wanted to do at that time. I declined. You see I come from a family of pastry cooks. My Grandmother was the family's wedding cake maker and my Mother made her way from the bottom of a grocery store bakery food chain to be the manager and run it. I know nothing spectacular but they have also inspired a love of cooking in me. I did attended culinary school at a community college for a year and a half until i got injuryed at work and I missed mid-terms because of Doctors orders and brused ribs. I have never restarted. I have also thought about it but never gave it a chance. Oh, I went back to school and got a diploma as a Medical Secretary (my mother's idea of great work and no weekends) I can't blame her I was a single mother with no one to really watch him. I have been married for two years know and I create wonderful dishes and desserts for my husband. But I have always felt is it enough for me. I am currently unemployed and have no idea what to do. My brain has been floundering on what to do with myself. And that's when upon watching your movie it had really made me ask myself: if you love it that much to continue to think on it and always wanting to know more; is it worth giving up on it. So Julie Thank You Thank You Thank You for this wonderful gift that has given me a reason to find my desired path.
