I'm so vain, I probably think my book is about me.

As has been pointed out in the comments:  It turns out that Julie & Julia is about Martha Stewart!

I knew it!  God, how could I have been so arrogant and stupid....

I love how she said that. On the bright side, you just got a lot more press and for free.

Oh. Em. Gee. Methinks Martha may have gone 'round the bend. Though as Alyson points out, the more people see the movie, the better for you, eh?

Oh dear, that's a bit nuts.

Who does she think the Julie is in the title d'you think?

Anyway, Delia Smith wrote a How to Cook series in the UK back in the 1990s and she's slightly less nuts than Martha Stewart and shouts drunkenly at football games.

She thinks the book is about her? What about the blog..was that about her, too? Well, she is certainly showing her true colors.

Wow, this is. WOW.

Maybe, (I can only hope) she meant that the movie was about something that she had *also* done, not that the movie was meant to be about her??

...But who'm I kidding?

Shame on that journalist for not having a clue!! Perhaps she was so in awe of the "queen" that it didn't occur to her to double check that whole "they're making a movie..." What a schmuck

Well, maybe that explains a lot about Martha - she's got a split personality and named the other one Julie!!!
I guess that Sally Field movie "Sybil," was about her too....

Hey, here's an article about SARAH PALIN, written by a REAL ALASKAN. Sent to me by a friend who lives in Alaska, one of the few Democrats in a very red state. This author writes a blog about progressive issues in Alaska. He hates palin almost as much as we do.

ARRGH, that makes me SO MAD on your behalf. What the hell?

Have you seen her daughter's show, "Whatever Martha"? It's kind of awesome and kind of sucky, all at the same time. Alexis Stewart just rips into her mother the whole time. It's trainwreck TV.

what a moron she is. I always thought so, but for her to say that proves it to the nth degree. I would so send her an autographed copy of the book and tell her since it's about what she did, maybe she'd like to read it??? Byyotch

I remember her also saying to TR Knight (of Grey's Anatomy) that Grey's Anatomy was based on the book "Grey's Anatomy." He was a bit non-plussed. I'm sure the title is play on the title but it's a little light on plot.

Um, hi. I'm kind of new around here. It's really rather eerie that this is the first entry of yours that I'm commenting on.

I learned about you from reading your book, of course. I just wish Martha Stewart would think some before she opened her mouth, what with her thinking that the "Julie and Julia" movie was about her and not about you.

Love how you're poking fun at her.

Okay, I love your book & your blog & u! And, I'm not a "Martha" person, but I am going to play Devils Advocate for a minute. I grew up with a crazy cooking foodie mother who lived and breathed Julia Child. The day Julia died will go down as one of the saddest in my mother's life. Growing up she repeatedly told me of her Friday night dinners with friends where they would cook every single one of the recipes in "Mastering the Art of French Cooking." My mother and her friends worshiped that book and they managed to work their way through the whole book week after week. And, from hearing her tell it, this was a pretty popular thing to do at the time, when Julia worship was really in full swing. And, Martha and my mom are about the same age... so, maybe Martha just misspoke. Maybe she wasn't trying to take your credit, she was just thinking back about a popular trend of her day. Granted, what she said definitely came out the wrong way, but, maybe she didn't mean to say it the way she did... And, I've got to say, my mother and I both loved reading your book. My mom especially so because it brought her back to all of those fantastic carefree Friday nights with her friends...drinking wine, smoking joints and eating French gourmet food!

Oh, I think it was definitely a matter of mis-speaking. It's just such a hilariously Martha way to misspeak. Don't get me wrong - I love the woman, she cracks me up.

Hi Julie,

I am horrified at the article. Nevermind that Martha Stewart is an egomaniacal witch, but that the journalist just took EVERYTHING she said without verification. As a journalist I apologise for us all (we're really really sorry).

I just picked up a copy of Julie and Julia (what can I say, I live in M'sia and books take awhile to get here), and came bounding onto your blog to gush congratulations. Only to be stopped dead in my tracks by Martha of all people.

But I will NOT be stopped! Julie, I picked up your book to get through a rough patch and my god has it helped. I tore through it in a day, laughing and cringing by turns (poor lobsters), and just wanted to say thank you. Thank you for doing what you did, for writing a blog, and for writing a book.

Cheers and here's a one-up to Martha and that journo!

Hi Julie, Your book got me through some rough patches the past few months. You see I read cookbooks before going to bed as it ensures I have comfort dreams! So your book caught my eye as an obvious choice for getting through some difficult days. So first, thank you for that. And thank you for your inspiration. I now feel free to attempt recipes and fail! In fact some much loved recipes that my dear departed mom used to make with ease - are now top on my list to master. It will no doubt take numerous trys to get her flaky raisin squares down- but I feel that however long it takes I am up for it because of your undaunted commitment to your cooking goal. I am ready to make a mess, to cry and flail things and wake up and do it again - until I reach that moment where it all comes out right and I can close my eyes and imagine my beloved mothers smile, radiant and proud. She would have thought you were great!

Again, thanks for your inspiration, humour and down to earth beingness!

A grateful Canadian!

I loved your book and can't wait for the movie. Nobody does it better than Nora Ephron. Maybe Martha is wondering why she wasn't cast as herself.

Hi Julie!
I'm a french student. I've just finished to read your book and I think you made it. But... and that's why I wanted to write you, even I'm french, I am vegetarian (no meat, no fish, no seafood). Yes, yes, and I swear it is not so exceptionnal here in France.
I was a bit shocked by some passages in your book, I guess you can imagine which ones. Please, just understand eating dead animals and awful things like frogs, brains and kidneys is not "frenchy". Lots of french people are really disgusted about that. To be french and eating in a french way is just eating good things is a modern and traditionnal (yes!) way and most of all, with simplicity. Doing the best with the minimum. Don't need to joint poor animals or to kill them cutting something, don't remember exactly what, between their eyes. Taste is something wonderful when you have a clear conscience. I would be happy to answer your questions about how we could stay slim drinking wine and eating butter and cheese.
Stop to the clichés!!!

Bonjour Julie!

Do you think that maybe she was "Just kidding!!!" It is possible that she has a sense of humour but...I don't know...did her people call your people? You should definately have your people call her people. Maybe she's smoking crack. She does look thinner.

I hate to break it to her and to you, but your book is actually about me. Here's the e-mail I sent to my BF who dropped off the book to me two days ago:

----- Forwarded Message ----
I collapsed last night in a heap of mucus and misery at 8 p.m. last night and woke up at 1:48 am--couldn't sleep. So, I read all the way to the next-to-last chapter of Julie & Julia.

You say she reminds you of me? It's a little spooky how like me she is. She's histrionic, and snappish to her sweet husband, and gets overwhelmed, and freaked out by bathroom plumbing breakdowns. (But where was the Clorox?). And even though (thank God) I am not living in Yankee-land exile she, like me, understands that New Yorkers do not know everything and after Texas, NYC is just a downer, especially in winter. Oh, and she tosses in a few Briticisms here and there like "arse" and "in their cups." And random things, like scraping marrow from the bone, will propel her into an existentialist musing where (I totally get this) she starts contemplating the vastness of the universe and the question of finality versus enternity. (Shudder). I love this line: "Methodical is the very last thing I am."
